New Brighter LED Light Bulbs to Replace CFLs

We have already seen that newer LED (Light Emitting Diode) based light bulbs are highly energy efficient comparing incandescent or regular CFL bulbs. However, they are not bright enough to be used for regular lighting needs. In other words, you would require many LEDs to produce same illumination as of regular bulbs.

Scientists at Glasgow University have found a solution to improve the luminance of LED lights. The new process named nano-imprint lithography creates millions of microscopic holes on LED surface. These tiny holes will allow more light to pass through the surface and hence improving the illumination.

Dr Faiz Rahman, the scientist behind this project said to BBC

”As yet, LEDs have not been introduced as the standard lighting in homes because the process of making the holes is very time consuming and expensive. However, we believe we have found a way of imprinting the holes into billions of LEDs at a far greater speed, but at a much lower cost.”

According to Rahman the days of the humble light-bulb could soon be over.
